tree + fence
[for Zoe Leonard]

a dance, a question
a performance, a zine
a chance to look at the sky

A tree that grows up and through a structure, like a fence, undergoes a complex cellular mechanism - CODIT - to absorb the injury. In this way you could say the tree is a kind of memorial. But what astonishes me, the thought to which I keep returning, is that in most cases, unless cut down, the tree is still alive. Still growing.

Audience members watched  a 15-minute performance from across the street, on the Flushing Avenue sidewalk between Waverly and Clinton. From there we walked to the picnic tables in front of the Brooklyn Navy Yard building’s main entrance. I served hot chocolate out of a 40oz tumbler into tiny teacups. Part 2 of the performance was a monologue / essay / question. To end, I gave a cherry blossom to each person present and to each of the trees in the vicinity.

Following the performance, we assembled zines from loose pages that I had brought. I took photographs of trees and sky for each person to put on the front of their zine.
